an unpleasant surprise the first
time you turn on your air condi-
tioner this summer.

Many cars, especially older ones,
tend to leak Refrigerant 12, the gas
which your car's air conditioner
requires in order to operate.

If a substantial amount of
Refrigerant 12 has leaked out and

over the course of the winter, your
car’s air conditioner will only blow
out hot air — not exactiy what
you'll want during the dog days of
summer.

In the past, do-it-yourselfers
who wanted to replace fost
Refrigerant 12 had to buy a can of
refrigerant, and a hose and tapping
valve, then attach them together.

resistant components for use in
southern climates.

Driving in drought-stricken
areas is also hard on the air filter.
Its job is to remove dust from the
air before it enters the engine.

with dirt, the engine will be starved
for air. Fuel economy and perfor-
mance will suffer and exhaust
emissions will increase.

The excessively rich mixture
caused by such a malfunction can
cause the exhaust system to
overheat. Be careful when driving
or parking on parched grass. The
heat from the car has been known
to cause fires.

Finally, hot weather driving
places a heavy burden on the
engine’s cooling svstem as well as
on engine oif and transmission
fluid.

Before extensive summer driv-
ing, check these fluids and com-
ponents, coiscludes the Council.
Make it a daily check during a
high-mileage vacation trip.
