In contrast to B.C.’s quirky Premier, the Honorable Jobn Reynolds, Speaker of the Legislature, exudes statesmanlike dignity and the brochure makes the most of it. He runs a highly efficient constituency office and gets back fast to any constituent seeking help. He lost out to Zalm-mania in the 1986 leadership race but his political background — a former MP who later honed his com- munication skills as a radio hotliner — is actually much broader. He’s been around the block. And he’s stayed clear of the ” Visions Weat Photo Cabinet key HE APPOINTMENT of Capilano-Howe Sound MP Mary Collins to a junior cabinet post is a tribute to her flag-carrying work in the past year's bitter party in-fighting. Still under 50, he has more time on his side than the party now has. Once the Socreds accept that Vander Zalm or any of his cabinet yes-men as leader spells an NDP government by 1991, clean-nosed Mr. Speaker could be their best hope for the rest of this century. ont NEW MANAGEMENT takes over this month at Horseshoe Bay's highly successful retirement home. For its first 10 years Libby Lodge, home to 55 seniors, has been run by six dedicated ladies forming the Horseshoe Bay Retirement Society who’ve operated it admirably and also kept the books healthily in the black. Now they feel it’s time for a rest themselves and they've found the ideal “‘takeover’’ group: the Howe Sound Lions Club, headed by president Roger Alien. So HBRS president Avril Sandall, ex- ec. director Edna Carroll and their board colleagues are now retiring, full of honors, to be replaced by a new Lions board consisting of Glen Cooper, John Brettorer, Wilf Elder, Ken Bairstow, Dan Hanson and Conrad Nadeau. But there'll be no name changes and the resi- dents may even look forward to some extra goodies — when money’s needed for a worthy cause, watch a Lion go to work! wee TAILPIECES: In town this weekend (to see and be seen!) is a hot contender for John Turner’s job. As the new associate minister of national defence, Collins will indeed, as she has said, be closer to the decision-making process, especially in vital federal government shipbuilding contracts. Those contracts, which include the $350 million Polar Class 8 icebreaker project awarded to North Vancouver-based Versatile Pacific Shipyards Inc., are currently supporting Canada’s major shipbuilding yards. If such West Coast shipyards as Versatile are to sur- vive the current stagnant international shipbuilding market, they will need a more equitable share of future federal government work. With the $4 billion program to build six new navy frigates already in Eastern Canada. a good start in providing that equity would be to xward the $750 mil- lion contract to build 12 Canadian Navy minesweepers to North Shore shipyards, two of which formed a con- sortiam that made an unsolicited bid on the project late in 1987. Collins was instrumental in helping tobby for the Polar 8 contract. We can only hope that she and the other three B.C. Tory MPs in the new Mulroney cabinet lobby as hard to keep B.C. and its interests from being moved back to their traditional place on federal government backbumers.
