Residents blast development process

THE DEVELOPMENT application process in North Van-
couver City came under fire Monday as a developer and
residents squared off over a new housing proposal.

Area resident Judith Watson
blasted the city development ap-
plication process and called for
better ways to inform those resi-
dents affected by new projects.

by the owner or the architect to
ask what I thought,’ she said of a
proposed housing development at
23rd and St. Andrews.

site until a planning study is com-
pleted this summer.

But project architect Siegfried
Toews asked council for some
direction on the fate of the proper-
ty. ‘*Does council wish to see a
better use of this property than
five single-family homes?’’ he ask-
ed of the single family-zoned
property.

Lance Development Corp. has
proposed 21 units of housing
designed for seniors. ‘‘It’s targeted
for an over-55 market much like
Stoker Farms,” he explained.

A planning study for the court-
house area kicked off June 11 with
the first of three public informa-
tion meetings to discuss future and
present developments.

About 125 residents attended the
first meeting, speakers told city
council.

“Council should take no action
on the isolated development pro-
posal until the courthouse study
has been completed,’’ resident
Alan Merridew said by letter.

With two further information
meetings still to be held, the plann-
ing study is likely to be presented
to city staff members for comment
at the end of July.

the study and its recommendations
