22 ~ Wednesday, May 6, 1987 - North Shore News m7 MAYBE YOU can't really take a tree to lunch for National Forest Week this week, but you could adopt one. Pick out a particular tree species and find out as much as you can about it, perhaps the one in your yard or down the Street. National Forest Week is a do- it-yourself event during which people are invited to do something special to demonstrate their inter- est in Canada’s trees and forests. There are dozens of oppor- tunities to help celebrate the occa- sion, or you can make up your own personal activity if you like. The anual observation started in the 1920s and has been going ‘strong ever since, changing as it grew from Forest Fire Prevention Week to the present emphasis ‘on Forests — A Shared Resource. So what can you do to recognize National Forest Week and the im- portance of Canada’s forests? If you live in a city, don’t feel left out. Canada’s forests are almost as important to you as they are to people whose jobs depend directly on them. After all, forest products are Canada’s biggest export and the indirect source of tens of thou- sands of city jobs. Explore your urban forest, the hundreds of trees that line your ci- ty’s streets, shade its parks and grace its backyards. You could start around your own home with a look at the trees in your yard or on your street. What kind are they? Are they native to North America or were they introduced from somewhere else. Are they healthy and free from rot, insects or other damage? If you’re a camper or hiker, visit your favorite park, refresh yourself with its beauty, and make a special resolution never to be responsible for destroying it by be- ing careless with fire. If you can’t get out to the forests, visit your local library and discover the _wealth of stories, history, culture and technology that grows from Canada’s forests. Or just take a look around your home, note all the things that are made from wood, and imaging where we would be without the forests. Learn and tell others about the various rules and regulations that govern hunting, fishing or travell- ing in parks or forested areas. Watch, read and listen to news and features on forestry, or write a let- ter to your local newspaper about some forestry subject or report. And of course you can join 2 group such as a provincial forestry association where you can help promote sound forest manage- ment. If you belong to a business, ser- vice or fraternal organization, there are many things your group can do together, like organizing tree plantings, presenting seedlings to your elected officials, taking nature tours in the forest, or holding a picnic with a forest theme. You can also arrange tours of mills and wood-products manu- facturers, prepare displays - for shopping malls and other busy locations, and organize parades or demonstrations of logging sports like log rolling and pole climbing.
