Business helping at least 28 North Shore students to test the waters of the business world by set- ting up their own businesses this summer. By LISA SMEDMAN a Colleen’ MacDonald and La Robert Mah of West Van- oe couver are just two of the wf students taking the plunge. : They are using a $3,000: Stu- dent Venture Loan to set up coe, College Closet Organiza-. ned tions. : This company, which began operations last week with a 2,000 flier mailing blitz in the Sentinal Hill area, will see the two part- ners installing custom-fitted wire shelving that is designed to increase closet storage space. “We have high hopes,” said MacDonald. ‘‘We’re hoping to make our tuition ao plus a profit.” a) MacDonald, 23, is a four- me th-year - geography major. ” Mah, 22, is a fourth-year us business administration ma- Met jor. The partners met through the SFU enterprise club, a group of young en- trepreneurs who glean business tips from guest speakers. Mah came up with the idea. for. a custom-fitted closet shelving business. MacDonald researched the types of product already on the: market at the Vancouver Home Show. They decided to go with wire shelving, because they could offer it at about half the price of the wooden shelving currently available on the North Shore. So far, most: of the Sru- dent Venture loan has been sunk into the purchase of materials. The 2,000 fliers cost College Closet Orga- nizers $38 to print and $140 to mail. ‘‘From there, it de- pends on word of mouth,” says MacDonald. MacDonald and Mah are currently cutting and fitting the shelving themselves, but they hope to have hired one or two students to do in- stallations in another month or so. They also plan on do- ing some door-to-door sales, which should tell them which areas on the North Shore are receptive to their business. From there, it’s simply a matter of blanketing - that area with more fliers. Another student who is taking advantage of the Stu- dent ‘Venture Loan Program is Kevin Wright, president of the very successful Westwright Student Painting Inc. Wright, 22, is a third- year business administration major at SFU who set up his company in North Van- couver three years ago. Last summer, company utilized a $2,000 Student Venture loan, and hired 20 people. By the September deadline for Wright's — repayment of the loan, Westright Student Painters had painted 90 North Shore homes for a net profit of about $17,000. This year, Wright is ap- plying for another $2,000 loan to expand his. business to include renovations, and to cover all of the Greater Vancouver area. He has set up what amounts to a fran- chise system, where 10 area managers pay Westright Student Painters a fee to cover administration, adver- tising, and bulk paint pur- chasing capability.
