yoy . : . al ® g | 8) r | . an a . : SECTION Coinciding with the opening in Vancouver of Solwest 80, the Solar Energy Society of Canada’s National annual conference, Energy Minister Bob McClelland recently announced several new solar demonstration projects worth more than $200,000. The most significant concerned six demonstration “low energy” houses. This project, which is being carried out with = the cooperation of the B.C. Division of HUDAC, will show the consumer what they should be looking for in energy efficient new home design. The houses will be constructed in Prince George, Greater Vancouver and the Capital District. Selection of designers is currently taking place. :] B.C. looking at solar housing Working with the Feds “Although our concern for many years to come will be with the existing housing stock, we main must make _ absolutely certain that we stop adding to the problem by building new inefficient homes,” said McClelland. Another project will focus on the commercial sector of energy demand by looking at the possibilities for utilizing passive solar and energy conserving design in low rise buildings. “We are not looking at downtown high rises with large mechanical systems,” said McClelland, “but the kind of small buildings that can be found in nearly every town in B.C.” Passive solar refers to the increased use of south facing windows with a balanced increase in the internal mass of the building for heat storage.
