No physical development of the Rockwoods Estate adjoining West Vancouver's Whytecliff Park will be undertaken for the next year if West Van council has its way. With one abstention, council voted unanimously Monday night to adopt this course pending an in- vestigation of alternative ideas for the educational and/or cultural use of the UBC property deeded to the university by the late Major- General Victor Odlum. Alderman Don Lanskail criticized’ UBC's “bad judgement” in springing a controversial subdivision proposal for the property as a surprise on council and the community. The project would have consisted of 19 dwelling units to be built by Cressey Development Corp. which has a purchase option from the university. Lanskail moved that a council decision on the - application be postponed for one year in order to give all parties concerned an op- portunity to come up with suggestions for the use of the estate as an educational and/or cultural facility. He proposed that council should obtain an un- dertaking from UBC that nothing be done to change the status of the property for that one-year period. If UBC would not comply with that request, Lanskail suggested that the maunici- pality should rezone the property for educational use. It was up to the community itself, he said, to come up with ideas for the educational or cultural use of the land.
