HO From page 17 create contrast and softness within 2 square interior. A round dining table is not only a space saver in a square dining area, it is also less formal by eliminating the “head of the table.” Diagonal lines suggest action, movement and excitement. They seem to defy gravity and hold our attention longer than vertical or horizonta! lines. The eye creates a diagonal line when we contrast a tall plant with a short stubby object. A collection of pictures, arranged in a trian- . gular pattern at a staircase, follows the rhythm of the stairs; while the straight lines of the tri- angle follow the horizontal and vertical line of ceiling and wall. Contemporary architecture uses diagonal lines in roofs and ceil- ings. By repeating them in the layout of furniture and arrange- ment of ornaments, we can rein- force the feeling of excitement. Finally, horizontal) lines: while tall vertical shapes seem to reach for the sky, or increase the ap- parent height of 2 zoom, hori- zontal shapes and lines are earthbound and generate a sense of informality and restfulness. A large room can take in an informal atmosphere when hori- zontal lines are emphasized with a weighty seating group, broad shelving and a low, wide fireplace. E & GARDEN nReimiorce lines to have impact |. When used in combination with cool, light colors, horizontal! lines enlarge the apparent size of a room. Horizontal moulding installed along the perimeter of the room, low seating and furniture, a glass coffee. table, pictures arranged horizontally and venetian blinds combine to make a small room seem airy and larger. You may remember the defini- tion of harmony in the last article: “It can be achieved when one or two elements, such as color and line, are carried through con- sistently, while other elements vary to add a sense of variety.’’ The emphasis on a particular line, therefore, needs to be rein- forced to have impact. Variety can be introduced in the form of pat- tern, texture and ornament. Consistency is not one of the elements or principles of design, but it should be. Without being consistent, it is impossible to achieve any noticeable impact. I Jearned this years ago by try- ing .to create sunshine with yellow curtains. On visiting a model home on a dark and rainy day, I was struck by sunshine inside the home and noticed that the curtains were a bright lemon yellow. Convinced that this had created the sunshine, I bought the same curtain fabric’ and was disap- pointed when it did absolutely nothing to brighten the day. I returned to the model home and discovered that it did not only have yellow curtains, but also yellow walls, bright yellow seating, a lime green carpet, accents of green and cleverly distributed lighting. Space-planning, often the most frustrating aspect of creating a functional interior, will be the topic for the next article.
