AlO - Wednesday, April 21, 1982 - North Shore News inquiring reporter by Ellsworth Dickson North Vancouver City council is con- sidering using the soon to be empty Cloverley Elementary School as a 400 child day care centre. There is already a shortage of day care facilities on the North Shore and possibly this would help. Today’s question is: ‘What do you think of City council's day care idea?’ Jana Bobik Deep Cove I think it would help the chronic day care shortage. And it is good that the building = will continue to be useful. Emma Krouzelka North Vancouver On the surface, it looks like a good idea. There is a need for more day care spaces. Maybe 400 children is a little am- bitious. Some parents might prefer a smaller centre with more per- sonal Care. Now, Jehring and his five student placement assistants — Karen Reichel, Cathy Trembath, Jodi Mackenzie, Beth MacDonald and Diana Dory — are left to cope alone with the expected flood of North Shore student job-seekers. Last year the centre registered 2,533 students and place 1,632 (64 per cent) of them in regular or casual yobs. A casual job is any work lasting five days or less. This year, it’s estimated that registrations will reach around 3,300. Jehnng is appealing to employers and homeowners to realize that a summer job not only gives the student the experience he needs to meet future responsibilities wit is often his or her only ticket to a= continuing education. At the same time, he warns students that they must lower their standards regarding the types of jobs they are willing to take and also be prepared, this year, to accept much lower wages. “This is particularly important for those students who refuse to take on casual work,” Jehring says. “Casual jobs have been known to develop into full-time work, and the hourly wage is generally very good.” Another possibihty for students who are ‘'self- Starters” lies in creating their own summer work.
