The host team got off to a good start in Saturday's tier Il Atom opener as North Van blanked West.Van 4-0. Hard skating and persistent backchecking enabled the North Shore Winter Club “Flames” to overcome a | to 0 deficit and go on to defeat NSWC Team 6 by a score of 7 to 3 and clinch the tier II title. Goals were scored by Michelle McLeary, Darin Elliott, Michael Payne and David Butterfield with assistance from Jimmy Beaman, Blair Cooling, Steven Watson and Derick Lowe. CAL DEREN + a-O32 Brett Van Cleave's goal midway through the first period was the game winner in Hollyburn’s 5-1 verdict over West Van in Peewee tier IIT play, and in other action on Saturday North Van's tier I] Peewees’ Rook Brandon collected a hat trick and Allan Tarakanen a pair to carry their team to a 10-5 win over NSWC. On Saturday NSWC tier I Bantams sailed to an 84 triumph over the host club as Mike Statham and Dan Hubbard turned in hat trick performances, while Andrew Burgess contributed a pair for the win. Typical of Sunday’s action was the opening game between tier II Midget finalists NSWC and North Van Rec, won by the host club 11-10 on a goal by Collin Cotter 25 seconds into — overtime. In the first of two games ending in identical 5-4 scores, and televised by Channel 10 Cable West, viewers were treted to a duel between two tier I Hollyburn Atom ‘teams in which B. Pennefather produced the fifth and winning goal in the third period. Also of note was that only one minor penalty was assessed during the entire game.
