10 - Wednesday, March 17, 1999 — North Shore News OK in Horseshoe Dear Editor: Open letter to Mayor and Council: I was deeply disappointed to read in the North Shore News, the article entitied, “WV chops street vendors.” Being a frequent trav- eller on BC Ferries for the last few vears, have enjoyed, like many others, a quick bite at the Dog Pound during the summer. With my tight schedule, I just do not have the time, nor desire, t9 stop at a restaurant. I always found the Dog Pound to be professionally run and do not believe. that “it lent itself to a circus-fike atmosphere.” The article states that the street vendors are competition to the local businesses. I believe thar the local restaurants cater to a different type of customer and street vendors do not pose a major threat. A line-up of people to me indicates a certain need which is being fultilled. That’s basic marketing. I agree you do not need to have a whole row of street vendors, but I think one or nwo vendors should not be toe much of a threat for the focal community, especially when they are only open for a few months. Given that this is a park area near the BC Ferries, there is absolutely nothing wrong in having a hot dog stand in the vicinity. I strongly believe the decision not to renew Sean Kennedy's licence be reconsidered as he runs a good operation and has to be com- mended for his entrepreneurial skills. Surely, the residents of West Vancouver do not have a probiem with their kids applying some entre- preneurial skills. Lastly, do bear in mind that hot dog stands are common in all municipalities, and major centres, even uptown New York! John Moore's recent fashion col- umn “The history of trench wearfare: Military issue to movie cool, appeal of a classic endures” answered almost all of my questions. It was well researched, and the horrors of a war nearing a century of age is important to remem*-r. But John, do any examples of the original Burberry exist that are accezsible to the public? Thank you for a wonderful update on a classic. Dave Carpenter Sunnyvale, California voicebox@daai.com f : i + Ta keep your Honda performing at its best, don’t open your hood to strangers. Dear Editor: Poarended the March S meeting of the North Vancouver District counci where the issue of direer democracy was dissossed and detested. Twas shocked to see our mayor, Don Bell, vote against a resolution that would have let the citizens decide in] November whether they would want to have people-initiated rei erenda. This, after 18 people stood up to speak in favour of it, and none against. Mind vou, adding this vote in November would have cost nothing additional and would have ensured drat these elected officials would be acting in the interests of their con- stiruents, What would they have had to fose and what were they atraid of? Councillors Glenys Deerng-Robb and Janice Harris seemed to show a lack of understanding of the concept. Both quoeted misteading statistics about direet democracy in their vehement attack on leting the people have their sav. However, Coun. Trevor Carolan went right over the top, when he accused the direet democracy peopte of “...wanting Leninist per- petual revolution”! Though Couns. Par Monroe, Ernie Crist and Lisa Muri put up a valiant effort to sup- port the findings of the Task Force on Direct Democracy, we were summarily denied the right to decide. 1 know who TIE be voting for in November!
