Since childhood | have been interested in arts, chiefly painting and drawing and have had several very success- ful exhibits in Europe and California. | am a member of the West Vancouver Sketch Club. T mention this to illus- trace the fact chat f am not anti-art. | was present at the meeting at municipal hall a little while back when this proposal was brought up. Nothing was mentioned about the entire cost of the proposed project or how it was to be supported in the future, as arts centres cannot support themselves financial- ly. It was guessed that it might cost $15 million but, according to 3 Maggie Pappas, that was not a prob- lem. That money couid easily be raised “somewhere.” No roblem. The only real prob- lem was where to locate this sorely needed institution. Time was entical. Tt was cru- cial that this) proceed. It would not cost the caypavers a cent. “Ther” would do whatev- er “we” wanted. Ambleside Park was the preferred place to putit. Pdo not agree that “our” Ambleside Park should be sacriticed iu this manner to please a special interest group even if Mr. John Clark of the West) Van Chamber of Commerce says it is nota real park because it does not con- form to his ideas of how 3 park used to be in another country ina bygone age. If it is so easy to find $15 million then tind $16 million or whatever it takes and buy a piece of fand but don't ruin our park. Are they going to find a suitable picce of land fer a new soccer field and ten- nis courts? And pay for ie If council allows building in Ambleside — is any park safe? Why isn’t the opposition preventing the government from continuing to misman- age our tax dollars in this fash- ion. The waste of funds in the building of the “fast” ferry as well as the recent “low cost” credit to a company develop- ing another convention centre which will leave us holding the bag on overruns. While other provinces have to put up with a govern- ment that displays total fiscal ineptness, dragging us deeper into the mire of deficits. After years of studies and planning, the solution for the Lions Gate Bridge has us no further abead and seems to be anoth- er wasteful effort by the NDP government. The government should be restrained from making any further niajor decisions. Meanwhile we should con- centrate on having 2 proper replacement with at least four lanes for the First Narrows crossing.
