Dressing for success

Harvest helps
clothe needy

THE North Shore is a
shopper’s paradise with
three well-stocked
malls and dozens of
specialty boutiques.

But what if you're down
on your luck and can’t afford
to purchase a power suit for
that all-important job inter-
view?

It’s a very real situation
thar many of us tend to over-
look, says David Foster,
founder of North Shore

Harvest.

“Nobody thinks that in
the land of the rich, we have
this kind of need,” he says.
But we do.

Providing clothing is just
one of the ways North Shore
Harvest is helping its clients
from welfare to workfare.

Part of that process is
image building, says Harvest
founder David Foster.

“Self esteem is impor-
tant,” he says, reciting the old
adage “You never get a sec-
ond chance at a first impres-
sion.”

Since its Dress For Success
program kicked into high
gear in '93, the Harvest has
outfitted hundreds of clients
for interviews and employ-
ment.

Donations of professional
clothing items are received
from the community and
local businesses like Collette’s
Consignment Fashions on
West First.

All garments are cleaned,
sorted and tagged.

“We don’t just junk it in,”
says Foster, explaining that
clients should teel Hike they
are shopping in a clothing
store. Volunteers have
pitched in to build the closer
organizers and a changing
room at the Harvest’s West
Esplanade headquarters.
