Design students looking for work School's out for graduates of Kwantlen BY LAYNE CHRISTENSEN Fashion Editor THE second-year students of Kwantien’s fashion design and technology program have stitched their Jast seam — as stu- dents — and are now ready for hire. Among the crop of talent poised to embark on fashion design or related careers are two residents of the North Shore, Alina Lowe and Nargas Khabazha. Both had a chance to showcase their designs before ‘sell-out crowds at the pro- gram's four year-end fashion shows at the Richmond campus last month. Lowe showed a line of coordinates for Holiday ‘96 that was created for West Coast Apparel as an IndustryLink project, Kwantlen’s three-year-old program that pairs students with local manufacturers for a week- long practicum. Lowe was presented the Technical Merit Award for her three outfits in stretch will, stretch velvet and satin charmeuse. The award was accompanied by a cash prize of $100, which the former West Vancouver Secondary student intends to stash away for a Paris shopping spree. (Lowe is planning a trip to France in September.) In the mean- time, she is hoping her practical experi- encewill help her land a job with a large man- ufacturer. North Van's Nargas Khabazha plans to build a career from her year-end project, a collection of career fashions for the full-fig- ured woman. She is looking at opening a boutique that caters to women sized 12 through 22. and is scouting for a North Vancouver location. “Everybody designs for the perfect body.” said the 40-year-old mother of two. “They forget about women aged 35 to 50 and these are the real women.” _ SINT aD A A REOPEN EO NOM PRN Noa ALE MO MOONE LOT LAE A AAI I A IN At B.C.
