Naming names from
fashion days gone by

THE FOLLOWING is excerpted
from Let There Be Clothes by
Lynn Schnurnberger:

Keeping track: In 1,000 BC it was
easy to find out if a voung Greek
Adonis was free to fool around —
Greek husbands carved the names
of their wives on the bottoms of
the sole of their shoes, leaving
witness to their devotion wherever
they tread.

Ancient Egyptians, on the other
hand, painted pictures of their
enemies on the inside of their
sandals.

Shady business: In 1951,
sunglasses were invented, when
lenses of amber were saturated in
linseed oil for protection against
the sun’s rays.

Aboui face: If your face appeal
seemed to be sagging, by 1886 you
could have a face peel. Beauty
parlor operators applied acid and
electric currents to remove the

outer layer of skin.

You could have paraffin in-
jected under your eyes or injected
to round out your cheeks. Could
plastic surgery have been far
behind?

Let’s kiss and make up: By the
1840s, every good New York
drugstore employed a full-time
cosmetician. To apply a lady’s
makeup? Sometimes. But primari-
ly they were ort call to repair male
customer’s black eyes.

Pin money: Would there have
been punk without Hunt? That's
Walter Hunt, who invented the
safety pin in 1849 but sold the
rights for a measly $100.

Picture this: In the 1960s, author
Truman Capote interviewed thou-
sands of murderers for his
bestseller In Cold Blood.

The only thing they had in
common, said Capote, was that
every one of them had a tattoo.
