RAIL employee Bill Ertman is all smiles as he views the first of 22 new Dash 8 40CM locomotives built for the railway company by General Electric. Rail unions upset over locomotive purchases BC RAIL recently signed a $44- million deal with General Electric (GE) for the delivery of 22 new 4,000-horse-power GE Dash 8- 40CM locomotives, a move that does not sit well with several unions that represent BC Rail workers. By SURJ RATTA News Reporter The first of the new locomotives was introduced to the press and the public recently in Squamish by provincial transportation minister Rita Johnston. BC Rail spokesman Barrie Wall said the company received tenders from GE and Genera! Motors and FOR PROFESSIONAL REAL ESTATE SERVICES GRANT BOTTO decided the GE bid was superior. Although GE has a plant in eastern Canada, Wall said BC Rail was forced to sign a deal with GE’s U.S. operations in Erie, Penn- sylvania because the company’s Canadian component already has a full production schedule and would be unable to do the work. “We got a 15-year extended warranty from GE. In the past when one of these (locomotives) became defective we just rebuilt it in our own yards,’ said Wall. “With this deal, we just drop in a new piece of equipmemt, whatever that may be. He added that all of the repair work on the new locomotives will be done in B.C. by BC Rail workers, and Wall said no jobs will be lost as a result of the GE deal. “The unions have been given written guarantees that there will not be any job losses as of this deal,’ said Wall, who added that the new locomotives ‘‘will require a reduced requirement in workforce.”’ But some union members argue that the GE warranty plan will result in a loss of jobs because most of the major repair work will be done by GE in the United States.
