jenn Mf Marscox Ba Manning ‘knows what he’s doing’ Dear Editor: Doug Collins’ vindictive castiga- tion of the Reform Party, the par- ty which he applied to for support, was to be expected. Can wars be won when cor- porals flout generals’ planned strategies? Just raising the members (17,000 across Western Canada) and the funds for this now dynamic movement in less than a year, to a point where Doug was impressed, would seem to indicate that Mann- ing knows what he is doing. Someone (not Doug) has said: “In a political campaign the voter’s perception is reality.’” With voters and other Reform can- didates voicing concern to Mann- ing and time running out, he took Collins ‘deserved better than he got’ Dear Editor: Iam a member of the Reform Party of Canada. There seems to be a perception that Mr. Manning has gone against the Reform Par- ty's principles. In our platform there exists a provision for ‘‘greater accountabil- ity of MPs.”’ This states that the Reform Party of Canada will pur- sue changes to the Canada Elec- tions Act preventing party leaders from refusing to sign the nomina- tion papers of a member of Parliament who has voted in ac- cordance with the wishes of his constituents, even when it con- trasts the party line. We believe in a@ representative democracy that will have a member take the voice of his electors to the House of Commons, not the dictates of the government to the people, as we now have it. . As a concerned leader, Mr. Manning took reasonable steps in an attempt to maintain the Reform Party’s credibility as a common sense alternative for Western Ca- nadians. We are a fledgling party that cannot afford an unfair perception that we are extreme in our thinking, but that we are con- cerned and prepared to take on the politically dangerous issues, such as the chaotic state of immigration and our opposition to constitu- tional changes that would have some Canadians considered FOR N.V. DISTRICT -ALDERMAN ELECT VIPOND,NORM)X commitment and responsibility extreme measures, gambling to have both Doug and the public perception he knows he must have. A calculated risk and he lost. After listening to the obscenities mouthed from the stage by Doug’s agent, Ed Murphy, during the closing moments of that bizarre mob scene at West Van High auditorium, I can only applaud the outcome, But whatever you may feel, the Reform Party is still the only viable game in town for those fed up with the way things are. As for Doug, well, Noel Wright already said it: ‘“‘Egotists clearly have poor taste, being more interested in themselves than in you.” Sid Dyke West Vancouver “‘distinct’’, others. In fairness, Mr. Collins deserved far better than he got. His opi- nions have brought him an unfair label or perception as to his char- acter. I was at the nomination meeting, and his actions of that evening and his subsequent column in the North Shore News, indicate to me that Mr. Collins is a proponent of the ‘two wrongs make a right’ theory, and is prepared to promote a distorted perception of Mr. Manning. or more cqual than I believe it is time to return to the serious task of selecting repre- sentatives who will faithfully rep- resent our concerns in Ottawa. | continue to believe that in North Vancouver we have such a person in Mr. Gamble, and the unfortu- nate events surrounding Oct. 18 did nothing to change this.
