Epilepsy Society wants people to be more aware of how successful modern treatment is and how to recognize early symptoms of the disorder in children. “Epilepsy has been around since the very earliest days of man’s his- tory,’ explained Penny Hicks, president. of the B.C. Epilepsy Society. “Ht appears in ancient law codes and in the writing of Hippocrates. All of which means that people have had centuries to develop all kinds of misinformation about it. Today hundreds of thousands of people with epilepsy are leading normal, active lives despite epilep- sy. Medical progress is opening doors; we want to make sure that the old myths and fears of the past don’t shut them.”” Epilepsy affects about 30,000 people in Greater Vancouver and more than 400,000 Canadians. During Epilepsy Month, Epilep- sy Canada aid B.C. Epilepsy Society are providing free infor- mation materials to the public on request.
