B.C. housing starts are up NEW HOUSING construction in urban B.C. strengthened according to a recent report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. A total of 2,747 units started in June, up from May's 2,635 units and up from 2,026 units in June 1986. All of June's pain was in single detached starts. B.C.’s performance ran contrary to the national trend in June. Starts in urban Canada declined to 23,499 units from 24,944 units in May. Canada’s Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) of starts was 243,000 units in June down slightly from 249,000 units in May. The SAAR for urban B.C. rose to 26,000 units in June. With a much stronger second quarter, year-to-date starts in urban B.C. are now up 25 per cent over the same period last year. The first quarter the year-over-year gain was only two per cent. At the end of six months, 12,211 units have started compared to 9,772 units last year. Much of this year’s 25 per cent pain is due to large in- creases in areas other than Vancouver. For example, Victoria is up 47 per cent over last year, Kelowna is up 78 per cent and Matsqui is up 56 per cent. Several other areus have similar large gains. In Vancouver starts are up 15 per cent. After a quiet period many areas outside Vancouver are expanding in terms of housing activity.
