TO rebuild Cypress Mountain Lodge died a quiet death at West Vancouver District Council Monday. Ald. Mark Sager was the only member to dissent when council voted against the rezoning to allow the rebuilding of the West Van- couver landmark. ’“T used to enjoy the hike into the lodge... It. was very disap- pointing when it burned down,”’ Sager explained. Cypress Mountain Lodge, formerly known. as Westlake Lodge, has existed in various :forms ‘since the early. 1930s. Although its status was never clear, it has long been used for -- overnight accommodation. . _ The. building had been recom- mended to council for designation as a heritage structure, prior ‘to the fire which destroyed over 75. per 5 out Raw DENTAL HEAUH Good fo 7 a oli 7 SrepoE CANADIAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer cent of the lodge. In cases of such extensive damage, reconstruction of a non-conforming use is pro- hibited by the Municipal Act. Use of the lodge did not con- form with the zoning of the area and council’s policy, which is to restrict development above the * 1,200 foot elevation. Both the advisory planning commission aud the Parks and recreation advisory commission recommended against the rezoning to allow for reconstruction of the facility. Ald. Alex Brokenshire concur- red with Sager’s personal regrets over the loss of the landmark, but pointed out that there were scrious complications, such as the lack of public access. Existing access is through private property. “"} believe the problems of potential demand for access, precedent for other development, economic viability on a limited-use basis and other. service issues outweighed the perceived benefits of a rebuilt wilderness resort in this particu'ar location,’’ reported district planner Steve Nicholls. Accerding to Nicholls, current — zoning permits a recreational cabin on a five-acre parcel and potential continuation of the existing, non- conforming cabins. Maude, MacKay & Co.
