SHORE RESPONSE TO SCRABBLE TOURNEY residents test word power THIRTY-FIVE North Shore residents will put their word power to the test at the first round of the 1987 North American Scrabble Open to be held Sunday. Local ‘*There are about 80 people par- ticipating in the tournament, and almost half of them are from the North Shore,’’ said Michael Spencer, an organizer of the popu- lar word game competition. Spencer credits the News, which published a December article pro- moting the event, for the high local response. The remaining contestants are from 12 municipalities across B.C. Contestants range in age from 13 years to over 80 years, and have varying degrees of skill at Scrab- ble. “I had to cut it off at 80 peo- ple,”* said Spencer, explaining the room would get too crowded with any more participants. ‘1 wasn't expecting so many people from the North Shore.”’ Spencer said the tournament, being held at the Pearson Hospital multi-purpose room, 700 West 57th Street in Vancouver, will be open to the public but “there is no smoking.’’ Play begins at 10 a.m. Each entrant at this first round competition will play four games. “There are a lot of novice ‘tour- nament players,’’ said Spencer. “The first round’s a_ get-ac- quainted, friendly kind of ses- sion.’’ There is a time limit of one hour per game, with three-minute egg- timers used to limit individual turns when contestants feel it is required. Any dispute about the legitimacy of a particular word formed by a contestant, will be settled using the Official Scrabble Players Dic- tionary. ‘‘It’s the source, and only source, used in tournament play,” said Spencer. Any person winning two of their four games in this first round of play will go on to the next elimina- tion round which will be held March 14 and 15 at the same loca- tion.
