LAWRENCE BOURNE III (Tom Hanks) is proud

the height of a fevered love
affair between the youth of

J.F. Kennedy, Lawrence is
not asking himself what he
can do for his country. He is
asking what he ‘can. do for

Graduating from Yale
College, the smug, debonaire
brat of an old-money family
is more worried about how
he can pay off a gambling
debt than how he could help
the underprivileged of -the
Third World.

Clad-in his white dinner
jacket and black bowtie,
Lawrence is forced to flee
the U.S. when his bookie
sends an enforcer around to
‘pick up money he is owed.

Candy plays Tom Tuttle
from Tacoma, a Peace
Corps volunteer sent to build
a bridge for a tiny Thai
village on an isolated river.
Much to Lawrence's horror,
he finds ‘that Tuttle, an all-
American, irrepressible
chubby-cheeked savior of
the. oppressed, is . stationed
with him and a: Jewish-
American volunteer called
Beth Wexler (Rita Wilson).

FEELS TRAPPED

Lawrence, having failed to
seduce Beth on the plane,
feels trapped with the idéal-
istic woman and the gung-ho
Tuttle. .While Tom sets out
to build a bridge and Beth

tions . without asking — the
locals what they think.
