Peo- ple with shelves of cookery books are essentialty readers; the recipe freak is first and foremost an eater, clipping, tearing, copying, begging from friends, not above stealing for that very best recipe for the very best salad-dressing or pie-crust or souf- fle or whatever. If forced to live with one, you. learn to accept that your daily newspaper will look like a Swiss cheese when passed on to you; you’re never sur- prised that there are serious gaps in the action in the magazine stories — there ob- viously was a recipe on the other side of the page! And the jaggedy bits of paper ac- cumulate on the kitchen counter like sea-wrack. _ To cope with my own mess, I labelled three big envelopes and taped them to the inside of the cupboard doors: one is for ‘‘Things I Must Try’’, one says ‘‘Possi- ble Column Material’’, and the last is for ‘‘Irresistible Desserts’’. So now, before the pile gets too unmanage- able, I shift the stuff into these hidey-holes. When the doors will no longer stay shut, 1 shall have to make another move. On New Year’s Day, when the thought of food made my eyes bug out, | groped around in my clippings and Aound a way out — a recipe for ‘‘Chili Soup’’, exactly what we needed for the leap from overindulgence to reali- ty. You could make it and eat it in a span of about three hours, but I preferred to start. it and Jet it ripen overnight to sharpen the anticipation. I put extra chili powder in mine, and a little extra salt at the end, but here it is and it’s beautiful: 2 green peppers, chopped 2 large onions, chopped 6 cloves garlic, minced 2 bay leaves, whole % cup of oil (60mL) 2 Tbspns. of chili powder (30mL) 2 tspns. of cumin (10mL) 2 tspns. of salt (10mL) ltspn. of sugar (SmL) \ Ib. of ground beef (500g) Ye cup of bourbon (Lonly hadrye!) We each had two bowls full, with slices of beer bread, and I had a little teen- sy bit left for the freezer. The recipe says ‘‘serves eight’’.
