DON'T WAIT FOR WINTER

N. Shore weather no excuse for laziness

LIVING on the North Shore where the weather is
mild, we scoff at preparing our cars for winter in

October.

We know we have weeks,
and probably months of rain
to look forward to wath
possibly never a sniff of snow

in the damp air.

Foohshly we neglect our
cars thinking “‘I°ll get my car
winterized when I put my

snow tires on as soon as it
snows.”’ Suddenly at's) the
middle of January, snow falls
without warning, blanketing
the city in white and we are
stuck without transportation
while every gas station has
long line-ups of drivers
walling lo pel snow tures pul
on.

Avoiding this catastrophe

One of the major. an-
noyances Of colder weather,
and precipitation is the ef-
fects they have on visibility.

Maximum visibility is
essential to driving safety and
His against the law to drive
with impaired car visibility.

So, first of all, make sure
windows are clean inside and
out. Check windshield wipers
to make sure they are doing
their job as well as possible.
And check defrosters (front
and rear) tor proper

cleaning fluid is topped up

Lights and turn signals
should all be clean and in

proper working order.

Oil should be changed
regularly every 8,000 km. In
winter, some people lke to
use a fighter grade oil for
easier cold starts.

is the battery which should be
checked, topped up = with
water if applicable, securely
connected and clean at the
connecuons. A little vaseline
will keep the terminals free
trom build-up.

Tires are as important in
the rain as they are in the

snow. If you keep summer
tires on during tall months,
make sure the tread is still
good, and keep the proper air
pressure to help with traction
on wet roads
