C6 - Wedmesday, September 22, 1982 - North Shore News SEEN ONE luxury hotel, seen them all. I defy anyone to identify the city or country any hotel is located in by looking at the pictures of the premises. Only if the front garden is choked with either palm trees or snowbanks can you even get much of a clue to the climate. Don't laugh, but ['ve heard many tales of people who return from a visit to Paris or Berlin never having left the immediate area of their hotel but theyll rha to anyone who'll listen, “We loved Paris. (Or Berlin, or Caracas)”. Amazing what a feel for the city one gets by driving to and from _ the I tike litde hotels, preferably run by a family — Papa running the desk and waiting tables, Mom in the kitchen, kids bussing and toting bags. Next best is in the bed and breakfast ac- commodation, second only because I prefer a few more people around. The local flavor can be about the same in both places. Must confess, “roughing it” — meaning tents, hiking, munching through the back woods ringing bells to alert the bears and shaking scorpions out of my boots isn’t too appealing. Some of us are city people. We don't get ner- vous dodging traffic in Amsterdam, squeezing on to crowded buses in Rome or walking through city streets after midnight. Others feel right at home camped by an oasis. They get their travel kicks out of “seeing the real country”. Tribesmen_ with little shrunken heads on their belts and murderous looking machetes. Rafts on jungle rivers and all those pretty-colored snakes swinging through the trees. Isn't it great that we're all different? And, it’s also great that there are travel op- portunities for all of us. I promise not to criticize YOUR approach to travel if you'll do the same for me. I received a_ travel brochure in the mail from Great Expeditions Magazinc. This Vancouver- based publication has slowly been branching out to provide unusual tours to exotic places. The groups they take are small, usually lamited to 15° members. Somc of the expeditions are designed to take full ad- vantage of the great wildlife preserves - eg. the Galapagos Islands — and while good gencral health is advised, you don’t aced the stamina of a Missoun mule to kecp up the pace. Others, such as the hiking wreck wn Nepal have more stringent requirements. “We expect all Nepal uekkers to be an cxcelicnt bealth, to be capemenced hikers and trayel- wise by Barbara McCreadie potential hardships’ of outdoor living for 25 days. There is is no upper age limit on most treks for those in excellent health.” Some of the offerings, such as the sailboat cruises of the Greek islands appear to be tame enough to send Granny, while rafting the Nahanni River (out of Fort Nelson, B.C.) strikes me as better suited to the “jocks”. I suspect that any of this type of tour would attract more of the younger generation, plus a number of extremely agile older folks. Since many of the tours venture into remote regions, those of us with young families left at home may feel a bit nervous about being so far away from communications for ex- tended periods. On the cost side, most fares are quoted with land costs only, some including flights within the country you visit. International air fare ts extra. Must admit a Galapagos Istand tour really appeals to me. Most tours to wild hfe areas are conducted by a naturalist which beats a cruise director all to hell when it comes to un- derstanding what you see. Besides, I think iguanas are delightful, sea magnificent and dolphins more fun than a roomful of turtles. Hiking Nepal at any age kittens. So, you just might find me doing a tour of Galapagos one of these days. Don’t hold your breath for Nepal! Historic trips The first non-Indian to visit what is now Yellowstone National Park was John Colter, in 1807, and he almost didn’t live to recount its scenic wonders. Forced by Indians to run the gauntlet, the trapper dived into a river and surfaced inside a beaver house where he hid while angry braves searched the banks for him. Africa’s Cape of Good Hope was settled by the Dutch, beginning in the 17th century. Ld Saee por wen oF 5 — s. A COMPLETE UNE OF ACCESSORIES AVAILABLE In his travels through the Persian Gulf area and Mesopotamia, the Great heard tales of a kind of “water” that seeped out of the ground and burned. He didn’t believe it until he tested it by pouring the strange fluid over a boy, then igniting him with a torch. Petroleum is now the area's chief product. Romania, though smaller than Oregon, has nearly 10 times as many people.
