Ci6-Sunday News, August 17, 1980 oe Sone a : VICTORIA (UPC) oa : B.C, Housing Minister Jim Chabot says the province was tired of waiting for Ottawa to provide incentives to house builders and will prepare to act on its own. Chabot said recently the failure of the federal government to reintroduce capital cost allowance incen- tives to builders means British Columbia will have to enact its own program to alleviate the current housing shortage. He said he will ask the provincial cabinet to provide funds for a housing program, despite recent orders from Finance Minister Hugh Curtis to cut back on spending. But even if B.C. goes it alone, it will still need an agreement with Ottawa’ to ensure that incentives provided to builders are not taxed away by the federal government, Chabot said. The minister said 4,700 housing units would be built before the end of the year under the government's $200 million program to lower mortgage rates. The program, introduced in January as a means of rejuvenating B.C.’s_ con- struction and = forest in- dustries, lowered mortgage rates to 9% per cent for individuals building new homes or apartments.
