Page 16 ' Dear Editor: I thank D.E. Mawhinney for bringing the Community School problem to the at- tention of the taxpayers of North Vancouver. I must however correct D.E. Mawhinney on a few minor points. I am not, nor have I ever been, liaison trustee for Burrard View School. I have not read a letter, from that School Community Association Secretary, to the Board and I have not been invited to that school on several occasions. When your correspondent refers to confusion by facts, it is obvious to all where the confusion lies. D.E. Mawhinney has mixed up either the Trustees or the Schools. As the writer must be aware, neither the Con- cerned Citizens Association nor myself is against the public use of schools for education or recreation purposes. What we do object to is the use of public funds, intended for the education of our children, for non- educational purposes. In this we are not alone. In 1977 the North Van- couver School Board ’ May 23, 1979 - North Shore News 7 TT , He doesn’t want | students deprived . requested a Legal Opinion from their lawyer on ex- penditures for Community School use. This report issued in December 1977 raised many questions regarding the legality of the expenditures. Further to this the B.C. School Trustees Association received a further legal opinion which agreed that School Boards did not have the authority to fund community services. Since. this report was received in September 1978, at least two further legal opinions have been received which are more definite and it is believed that one lawyer has been instructed to proceed with legal action. Community Programmes in the North Vancouver Schools will cost more than $250,000 in 1979. If the recommendations of a recent Task Force On Administrative Needs are adopted we can see this expenditure increase to two million dollars each year, when each school is given a coordinator and each coordinator is promoted to the rank of vice principal. Needless to say this Task Force was well supplied with those dedicated to the Community School Concept. Like your correspondent, Some teachers not worth their salt? Dear Editor: I never read so many heartbreaking letters in defence of their profession, their unselfish sacrifice for the good and welfare of education made me cry. I wondered why none of them could figure out the days they teach, maybe there was no computer handy? While kids know more somewhere else, where the teacher ratio goes as high as 1 to 40, but with less frills, the teacher federation isn't satisfied with the present one nearly 1 to °0.
