10 ~ North Shorea News - Wednesday, March 29, 2000 MAIL Box It’s time to stop bashing the SPCA Outraged at letter Dear Editor: It’s high time for Judy Stone and those under her rule to stop bashing the SPCA. Recently I had to go to our local North Van shelter for other business and I was pleas- antly surprised to find every- thing in goed order. There were three or four budgies ina large, clean cage by large win- dows — for their own view, and one of the inspectors standing in front of these windows — overlooking the creek and trees — with a small parrot walking up and down his extended arm, ge a LONS TRANSIT PRIORITY STU then onto bis shoulder, 3 hop to his head, and then all the way back to the starting point again. This bird had been brought: in having a severe feather-plucking problem. The plucking occurs when a bird is left alone, and the loneliness and boredom gets more than anv one bird can stand. So with this “one-on-one” attention that I saw him getting today IT know he will stop pulling out his feathers — who knows they may even grow in again. There were three or four + ae rabbit cages lined up on a awole, each with a tiny bunny in it. [think they were happy bun- nies. There was a large, long- haired cesidem cat lounging in the hallway, quiedy watching the activities. And several young voiuntecrs were walking dogs outside in the sunshine — one dog tu one walker. And above all there was no smell at all — just an awareness of clean, slighdy coolish fresh air. This made a very positive effect on me because at one time PE had the unhappiness of knowing one place where an old women used to throw straight bleach across the floors — leaving the pets to walk through the pud- dles of bleach to burn their feet and the fumes to burn their eyes. The SPCA walls were alla spodess white. The only think glaringly missing and) much needed was a sign. It should be on the roof so that anyone dri- ving a car can see it, or at least on Marine Drive and bigger than a postage stamp. So it’s time to stop the bashing, Judy Stone! Councillor Craig Keating Councillor Darrell Mussatto Tault Dear Editor: I found myself shocked and outraged while reading a lcucr you printed in the March 19 North Shore News (“O#f with aprons; on with armor”). Yo actually print such stupidity is absolutely ridiculous. I can only hope that the narrow mindedness expressed in that letter does not reflect the views of your reputable paper. 1 would also like to take this opportunity to appeal to the disillusioned one who wrote the letter. First, | can hardly find any justification in any attempts to blame feminization of etucation for today’s problems ranging from disrespectful youth to global warming. Kids will always be kids and from the beginning of time they have always behaved in the fashion they were allowed, and taught to behave. Over the years these same age-old behaviour patterns have become iaore serious in their nature with the inventions and evo- lutions of products and services that allow children to have access to more dangers. This is not at all related to the feminization of any thing, it is simply an unfortunate result of progress. Progress that some individuals are ignorant to. We all know that global warming ts a very scary fact. But I fail to see how it has any relation to the feminization of education. [ also know that the use of harmful chemicals is not due to any votes of any “gals.” As tor his views towards the “justice” in the schoolyards of his day being swiftly resulved with *a few bloody noses:” let's take that same beer Gottle philosophy and add the very unfeminine 45 calibre found in Dad’s bedside table draver and you've got today’s news-breaking tragedy. Crime brought about by feminization? I think not. It does seem that “the manly arts” of fighting, yelling, and bullying can easily be detected in diat same kind of crime. It seems wrong to classify defects of the character such as intolerance, homophobia, racism, and sexism as virtues. Then again, I am speaking from a more modern perspective than someone who would. | do agree that the world is a mutch different place than it was half'a century ago; however, there is one thing that is the same and will always be: progress. Unless you are able to accept it as it happens you may find yourself unable to see clearly that the only thing to blame for any of today’s problems is willful ignorance. Thanks for making me giggle.
