Plans for new recreation facilities began in 1996 and resulted in die $25. million Recreation Facilities Master Plan being produced in 1999. The money approved on Monday night is to be drawn from the municipality's capital reserve. The largest vortion of the money, $288,000, is designar- ed for costs related to staffing and project support. A new western community centre (approximately 40,000 square feet; 3,716 sq. m) is slated to be built next year adjacent to the Gleneagles golf course. Planning tor the centre is scheduled to proceed simulta- neously with the upgrade to the Gleneagles clubhouse catering facility and service yard located on the public golf course, Once the new community centre is completed, the plans are to demolish the existing community centre at Marine Drive and 22nd Street and replace it with a facility approx- imately 20,000 square feet (1,858 sq. m) in size. The capital reserve funds will also help to complete the research and planning into improving the existing com- munity centre’s aquatic centre and ice rink. The seniors’ cen- we located at the site is also K’d for rec p due to be upgraded, with the centre offering to match fund- ing = provided by West Vancouver District. Coun. Victor Durman said the nwo community facilities are going to be designed to work together. “The idea is to create a vil- lage square where people can come and congregate,” Durman said. But Carolanne Reynolds, president of the Ambleside Dundarave Ratepayers’ Association, asked councillors why such oan important announcement had been with- held from the public until Monday’s meeting and was passed so quickly by the coun- cil. She said councillors have not provided the — public enough time to consider the motion. “There are many people whe are in favour of a commu- nity centre in the west but there are very many people opposed,” Reynolds said. Coun, Allan Williams told Reynolds that the standing committee on reerzation facili- ty development applied to have the item added to the agenda fuur days prior to the council meeting as required by munic- ipal policies. Mayor Ron Wood added that the standing committee's plans for the projects have already been in the works for nine months. One night only Bobby Bruce Are you a clone of your canine?
