noo! working NORTH Vancouver Schooi District is addressing the Y2K problem. A Y2K steering commit- tee was put together several months ago with school dis- trict employees as members. The committee’s first task was to identify all the sys- tems and devices in the school district that might have Y2K compliance prob lems. Working with a document sent to districts earlier this year by the Minister of Education, the committee identified 56 major items. These 56 items were then placed into the following categories: — instructional resources, building control . systems (for example, eleva- “tors, automatic — doors, alarms, time clocks), com- -pater hardware, computer software, . telecommunica- tions, office _ equipment, ~ external agencies (for exam- ple, banking, utilities). _.. AH 56 items were then “prioritized by potential risk of failure and rated as cither ~ high. (mission critical), on Y2K medium (business process- ing), or low (other) priority. A Y2K project time-line was then established. As of May, the committee was developing a comprehensive inventory of computer hard- ware, computer software, communications equipment, and clectronic devices that are date sensitive. Cace this inventory is complete the district will need to test and validate whether or not the systems are compliant. Testing of all systems is expected to be complete by Sept. 30. Subsequent te completing the assessments, the next step will be to review the results and begin the task of remediation where necessary. This stage ef the project will overlap with the testing phase through to Sepr. 30. The steering committee will provide a Y2K update once the inventory has been compiled -and an impact assessment has been com- pleted. This information will’ be available through the school district’s Web site at . 4. B. Se. (Eng), M: Se.
