Brady Fotheringham Contributing Writer WEST Vancouver coun- cil has approved $850,000 in funding for the first phase of a major upgrade te its schoo! and district playing fields. The decision Monday night marks the beginning of the implementation of the dis- trict’s recreation facilities nas- ter plan to upgrade and replace everything from aging tennis courts and sports fieids to new recreation centres. Many groups who use dis- trict playing fields have com- plained about fields that are too dark to play on in fall and winter months or fields that are badly in need of upgrad- ing. Coun. Victor Durman said that many schools have fields that are either rotten, damp or dark and the munici- pality needs to fix them to maximize their playing paten- tial. Pauline Johnson elemen- tary school will receive a new grass playing field that will be constructed this summer and fall. Because the field will need time to grow, it will not be ready for general use until September 2000, Soccer teams who regularly use the school ficld have made arrangements to schedule their games around the con- struction.
