Colin Thomas Contributing Writer PEGASUS F.C. may have dropped “North Shore” from its name but there’s no denying the team is the top soc- cer squad this side of the Burrard Inlet. Going into the winter break Pegasus sit a the top of the Vancouver Metro — League Premier division standings, Peg is 8-1 and seems to have regained the form which has made them a soccer power- house in British Columbia this decade. Last season was the worst in recent memory for the “Peg Lads” as they finished near the bottom of Premier and missed an invitation to the prestigious Provincial Cup even though they were the holders. Manager Frank Martinello says the reason for the turn- around is very simple — striker Rob Reed. “Rob being heaithy this year is the biggest factor after missing last year due to (knec) injury,” Martinello said. Reed has been partnered with Vancouver 86er Paul Dailly and former Olympic team member Troy Wood. “Winning the league is our Cali for an appoin north shore news @ SPORTS ‘egasus best on the Shore first goal” Martinello said. “Ive always thought winning the league is the toughest thing... you have to play con- sistently all year long in differ- ent weather conditions, the Avo cup competitions are obvi- ously huge but winning the league comes first.” The Premier league is com- prised of nwo inter-locking divisions with the two division winners. playing in a League Final. The nwo last place teams drop to division one for next sctason, Meanwhile, good things come to those who wait. Those words have been echoing in Norvan coach Gunther Frey's cars tor the past four months as he has watched his soccer club languish in last place. The Vancouver Metro League’s Premier division is arguably the top amateur league in Canada, and Norvan’s young squad is find- ing their return to the top flight a tough go. But help has arrived for Norvan as a nucleus of college and university play- ers have joined the North Van club for the stretch run which begins after the winter break. Norvan finished the first half of the season with just one win and only six points in ten games. “We've never had our whole team together,” Frey said. “We had 2 pile of injuries right off the start.” Norvan finally gus their first win of the year in its tenth attempt by beating = fndo Canadians 2-0 in Richmond. “It was the first game of the season where we had most of our guys there and they were all healthy” said the second year Norvan coach. Norvan have been bol- stered by che recent signings of Simon Fraser University all- stars Alan Koch and goalkeep- er Steve London along with Capilano College standout Greg Campbell. Norvan are in a dogfight with Portuguese Club of Vancouver to avoid relegation back to division one. While P.C.O.V. faded near the break, Norvan are unbeaten in three games as the team begins to take shape, Another North Shore Premier side patiently waiting for greener pastures is the West Van Trollers. Like their North Shore rivals, the Trollers see themselves precariously close to the relegation zone. West Van has also seen a major change at the top as “Derek had personal and business reasons for stepping down... many people don’t appreciate the amount of time it takes to guide a Premier club,” explained the new Trollers coach. “Derek is still involved with the team and he and IT will still talk about issues.” West Van has just pvo wins in cleven games and ten points.
