Fire Prevention
Week events
geared to kids

“AN ounce of preven-
tion is worth a pound
of cure.”

So said Benjamin Franklin,
the inventor of eyeglasses, the
fire-safe Franklin stove and
the first person to organize a
properly equipped firefighting
company.

Franklin wanted to stop
fires from destroying forests,
cities and homes. His words
caution us to be aware of the
hazard and to take steps to
prevent disaster.

Fire safery education is the
business of all modern fre
departments.

This week, through Oct.
12, many firefighters in the
Lower Mainland will visit
schools and demonstrate fire
safety techniques for the pub-
lic, The activities are a part of
Fire Prevention Week.

suspended for nine months

Firefighting ‘Through ibe Ages
features a special children’s
area that is full of fire satery
tips as well as toy fire trucks
and puzzles.

Children are the largest
group to suffer injuries from
fire. Tips to prevent such acci-
dents are offered in cartoons,
by the popular children’s
entertainer Count Floyd, and
by the clown Gary Gumboot
as well as by Mr. Dobee,
North Van’s own fire safety
entertainer.

Aspiring firefighters are
also invited to try on a fire-
fighter’s uniform and to man
the hose as the emergency
lights flash. A street grid
allows the children to plan the
fastest route from their house
to a firchall. Equipment from
Roman times to the present
day is aiso presented.

Cf special interest to
North Vancouverites is the
recreated 1911 firehall. If the
children listen carefully, they
will hear the firefighters and
their team of horses respond
to an alarm.
