WHY IS it that when a
young woman leaves her
- home in the morning, the
_last words her mother says
are always, “Please be care-
- ful honey. It just isn’t safe
. out there anymore.”

. You hear about it every day.

Women are getting kidnapped,
beaten, raped and murdered. It

. happens often, and everywhere. It

doesn’t matter what your race or

~. religion is, or even your age. It

_ doesn't matter where you live or
how you live. It happens to a lot
‘of women.-Too many women.

“Why is it that when you walk .
~~ down the street, you can’t even

‘look up from the sidewalk? You

“are too afraid that you will look. :

‘“out being in constant fear that

someone might jump out of a

. bush and attack you. You'can’t.
“take the bus home alone from

".. work in fear that someone might

“Ys it fair that all women have

to live their lives in fear? Is it fair.

: that we can’t even go downtown
“to shop because we might be /
“abducted and never return home
alive again? "-

- About a-year, ago a friend of:
“mine was walking to a nearby.
=“stere, alone; to. get some milk for

.-her mother. It was about’six'in the
“evening and still light out, when a
black car, approached her.and five
young males got out. They. fol-
lowed and finally caught up with
her..They beat her.until she.was -
black and blue witha couple of
broken ribs...
oo] didn’t even tell my mom.
. because I didn’t want her to
“worry about.me more then she — -
“already does,” she said following
the attack... -.
The five males told her that
their only reason for this attack
. was that they.did not tike her.
boyfriend at the time. She had -
“ never seen them before in her life.
“In Canada, about 58% of all
. females have been assaulted or
viciously attacked. This year, on
‘Halloween, between 8:30 and 10
> p.m., there were at least five
. known assaults in North
-Mancouver alone.
=" 'Two of my girlfriends, both
-17-years-old, shared their fears
with me.
‘-.s“T'm’scared to go anywhere by
myself. I only travel with two or,
three people. No less,” said one.
“I don’t even feel safe walking
“around alone in the daylight any-
more.” my other friend added.
- The frightening thing is that
.we really feel powerless. There
are not a lot of options available
for women to protect themselves.
Clearly, the best option is to
" ensure that you don’t put yourself
in a situation where you are alone
_ and vulnerable. It is better to be
“in well-lit public places than in
dark alleys and secluded streets.
