It . happens often, and everywhere. It doesn’t matter what your race or ~. religion is, or even your age. It _ doesn't matter where you live or how you live. It happens to a lot ‘of women.-Too many women. “Why is it that when you walk . ~~ down the street, you can’t even ‘look up from the sidewalk? It was about’six'in the “evening and still light out, when a black car, approached her.and five young males got out. They. fol- lowed and finally caught up with her..They beat her.until she.was - black and blue witha couple of broken ribs... oo] didn’t even tell my mom. . because I didn’t want her to “worry about.me more then she — - “already does,” she said following the attack... -. The five males told her that their only reason for this attack . was that they.did not tike her. boyfriend at the time. She had - “ never seen them before in her life. “In Canada, about 58% of all . females have been assaulted or viciously attacked. This year, on ‘Halloween, between 8:30 and 10 > p.m., there were at least five . known assaults in North -Mancouver alone. =" 'Two of my girlfriends, both -17-years-old, shared their fears with me. ‘-.s“T'm’scared to go anywhere by myself. I only travel with two or, three people. No less,” said one. “I don’t even feel safe walking “around alone in the daylight any- more.” my other friend added. - The frightening thing is that .we really feel powerless. There are not a lot of options available for women to protect themselves. Clearly, the best option is to " ensure that you don’t put yourself in a situation where you are alone _ and vulnerable. It is better to be “in well-lit public places than in dark alleys and secluded streets.
