No teachers’ names to be revealed in WV hockey ticket turmoi THE WEST Vancouver teachers’ union has -no in- terest in knowing which of its members have accepted the use of free Vancouver Canuck hockey tickets and wishes the entire issue would go away, an Official said. By Surj Rattan News Reporter Ron McQueen, president of the West Vancouver Teachers’ Association (WVTA), reacted to a recent comment made by West Vancouver District 45 School Board (WVSB) chairman Jean Ferguson. Ferguson said the school board . will not reveal the names of teachers who have accepted the free hockey tickets because they may be reprimanded by the teachers’ union. But said McQueen, “The ref- erence to the union reprimanding teachers is unfortunate. The West _ Vancouver Teachers’ Association and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation ‘has no such policy. “It's not been our history to discipline teachers,” said Mc- Queen. The WVSB purchased two pairs of Vancouver Canuck season tickets for $5,272. The WVSB used money collected as interna- , tional student fees to buy the hockey tickets. In a Dec. | News story, WVSB superintendent Doug Player said the hockey tickets were given to principals to be distributed at their WVS8 chairman Jean Ferguson... comments draw response from union. discretion as rewards to district staff. But Gaye Lefaivre, the wife of former Sentinel secondary school principal Peter Lefaivre, said as far as she knows, no teachers were given hockey tickets by her hus- band. “Peter may have gone to a game with a teacher or someone else,’ said Lefaivre. “‘He gave most of the tickets to my daughter and she sold them at the door.”’ ‘McQueen agrees the names of teachers who accepted the free hockey tickets should not be made public because they may ‘‘be em- barrassed”’ over the issue by other teachers. “We were trying to put this issue behind us,” said McQueen.
