Environmentalists celebrate new facility

tion will no longer be the only

garbage from residents without
’ charge,

On that day, people bringing
_ their waste to the transfer station
ca North Vancouver’s Riverside
Drive will start paying for their
garbage by weight, based on a
cost of $69/tonne and with a
_minimum charge of $2/load.

North Shore councils recently

decided to discontinue free resi-
dential drop-off when studies in-
_ dicated that many users of the
_ service were in fact small business
* operators trying to avoid com-
“- mercial dumping charges by
claiming their loads consisted of
household garbage. .

Residents will be able to bring
recyclables, such as yard waste,
‘strap’ metal, car batteries and
“yefrigerators, to the transfer sta-
tion for no cost, but, for weighing
purposes, they must bring down
the recyclables separate from any
garbage they intend to leave at the
transfer station,

Discontinuing free drop-off,
says North Shore Recycling. Pro-
gram, will not only put a halt to
abuses’ of the ‘system oy commer-
‘cial users, but will encourage resi-
dents to cut down on their waste
as well,
