“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God...and thy neighbor as thyself.”* Luke 10:27. “LOVE thy neighbor,’’ ad- vice which appears in the Christian Bible, is familiar to many people, including non-Christians. But increasingly, pecple in the Christian community are looking for ways to demonstrate to a ‘community with failing faith in Teligicus institutions, this Chris- tian caring for one’s neighbor. This is the aim of Neighbour- Link, a Christian-based organiza- tion that links Christian volunteers with people in the community who are in need. : NeighbourLink started . out in the United States under the name Love Inc. (In the Name of Christ) and is part of the World Vision ministry. Initially conceived by Dr. Virgil Gulker, it caught on like wildfire across the U.S. and now in Canada. Soon, the North Shore will have its own NeighbourLink. “Our vision is to have every Christian organization on the North Shore involved — there’s almost 50 here,’’ says Margaret Stevens, project director for the newly founded North Shore Neighbour Link. By Barbara Black News Reporter “If each church (on the North Shore) could provide 30 to 50 volunteers we'd have a fantastic base to serve the community,” says Stevens, sitting in her modest office with minima! furnishings. The organization is currently supported by financial backing from its sponsor churches. “Everything is 100% volunteer here,’’ Stevens says, inciuding her position. The third Canadian clearing house to open, Stevens says this program is one of 20 or 30 NeighbourLinks in the process of opening in western Canada. Why is.it so catchy? “Jesus said go out and do unto others, and in NeighbourLink this is exactly what we’re doing,’ says Stevens. ‘‘Christian congregations have people who really want to help people but don’t know where to find them.” With NeighbourLink, people from the North Shore community, regardless of their faith (or non-membership in a faith), can ask for assistance and be linked Founder’s passing marked ON MAY 29, 1992, Baha’is mark the centenary of the passing of Baha’u’lHah, their prophet- founder. . . Baha’u'llah was born in {817 and died in 1892. He spent most of his life as an exile and a pris- oner. Baha’u'llah, whose name means “the Glory of God,” laid the foundation of the faith whose universal principles of personal and sccial regeneration were revealed under conditions of op- pression unequaled in the annals of religion. The chief principle of Baha’u’lah teachings is ‘‘the Oneness and wholeness of the human race.’ To achieve this he urged, among other things, the abolition of racial, religious, polit- ical and economic prejudices, the *iary adoption of an international aux- language, equal oppor- tunities and privileges for men and women, a universal system of education, the independent in- vestigation of truth, the adoption of a world code of human rights and responsibilities, and the cre- ation of a world commonwealth of nations. The public is invited to join. local Baha’is in commemorating the passing of Baha’u’llah on Thursday, May 28 at the Lonsdale Quay Hotel ballroom. The pro- gram consists of a slideshow with a short talk and music describing the life and station of Baha'u'llah, together with a brief outline of the Baha’i faith. But it’s people whe fall in be- tween the cracks, who have no family here or no organization to help them that we can help,’ she says. The help may vary from pro- viding household services such as repairs, baking or shopping to of- fering companionship, tutoring or even a bag of groceries. As more church volunteers join the pro- gram the skill base will grow. “There are so many people in need on the North Shore, people who are hungry, people who spend far too much on rent. With a helping hand they can get out of it. If we can tide them over a bad time in their lives and make them feel good about themselves, that’s great.”” Stevens says the goal of Neigh- bourLink is to address immediate as well as any underlying prob- lems or concerns and to increase independence. It is not a welfare program, but it is concerned with the welfare of community members. People who call for help can be expected to provide information about their situation. But Stevens points out that vol- unteers are not there to ‘‘convert’’ people to Christianity. “If people join the church, then it’s just an extra blessing,’’ she says. : She believes NeighbourLink will show to the community that Christians do care.
