Scott Turner (Tom Hanks
is the type of guy that uses a
fresh piece of floss for each
tooth, twice a day. He
carefully trims his nose hairs
and a Dusibuster is consid-
ered standard equipment in
his police car. So it’s surpris-
ing when he befriends a
crusty old scrap dealer and
his guard dog.

And Hooch is one ugly hound.

The De Bordeaux mastiff’s skull
is mostly jaw and draped in oily,
loose skin that flaps over his face
when he runs. And he drools. Not
the inoffensive trickle most dogs
have. No, this is thick cheesy
strands that dangle from the cor-
ner of his mouth like cord. Pluto-
plasm.

That doesn’t mean Turner and
Hooch is a purebred, but it is
pleasant summer fun.

In this supposed black comedy,
Victoria (Winona Ryder) is an am-
bivalent high-school teen hanging
around a clique of malicious
mallies, all called Heather. She
loathes them, but still go. . along
with their cruel jokes.

Enter psycho rebel J.D. (Chris-
tian Slater), who talks like Jack
Nicholson and becomes her lover.
He starts to murder the Heathers
and anyone else who sticks in his
craw. In the ed, he tries to blow
up the entire school, but detcnates
himself instead.

of your life.

When the old man turns up
dead, Turner smells something
fishy in the quiet town of Crystal
Beach and pleads to handle the
homicide. But the price is high. He
has to babysit the junkyard dog.

As the sole eyewitness, Hooch is
the key to the mystery.

That's about it for plot; just
Hanks realizing his sloppiest
nightmare can become a faithful
partner. Mare Winnigham is the
town vet who provides the human
love interest, but this is reafly a
story about a man and his dog.

Hanks has the same easygoing
charm as Jimmy Stewart. A
scene-stealing mutt is frequently
cited as an actor’s least favorite
co-star, but Hanks uses ad-libs and
his own innate likeability to earn
his top billing.
