I try to keep Friday afternoons free to get out. You get a lot of good sugges- tions when you go out and talk to the guys.”’ What plans, if any, are being made for the North Shore of the port?: ‘In terms of forest pro- ducts, we're thinking about mak- ing some extensions to the Lynn- term facility. We're also consider- ing building another (forest pro- ducts) terminal on the North Shore. Forest product terminals on the North Shore are working to near capacity and we're looking at different options. In 1977 | came to Canada (as assis- tant harbor master with the Port of St. John. He was later ap- pointed harbor master for the Port of Halifax). J came to Van- couver in 1985, “I'd like to stay here, there’s a lot of opportunities here. The Port of Vancouver is an ideal place to be. We're trying to create Vancouver as an international fi- nancial centre. There’s an oppor- tunity for us to be an interna- tional maritime centre.”’ How did you feel on being named the port’s CEO and manager?: ‘‘it was a big honor to be chosen the manager and CEO of the biggest port in Canada. | believe we will become the top port in North America. We have a first-class staff and we have a very good working relationship with the terminals and the fabor force.” What is a routine day like for you?: ‘‘I leave home at 7 a.m. On a good day, |! can make it here (corner of Granville and Cordova) in 18 minutes. Quite often we have a breakfast meeting.- During the day I deal with many issues, from garbage removal in the port to meeting with customers. Some- times we have meetings in the evenings. It’s interesting, every day is different.’’ What do you like to do to relax?: “I used to play golf a lot. I'll go to the Lions Gate driving range and hit three or four buckets of bails. I like to build model ships and go to model shipyards. 1 try to do a lot of things with my fam- ily. All the kids really enjoy Van- couver.’’ This CEO has definite plans From page 30 While Vancouver is the largest port in Canada, it is also the se- cond largest in North America in terms of foreign tonnage shipped and ranks among the top 20 ports in the world. Soon, the all-clear signal is given, and the office workers are told they can go back to their of- fices. Stark looks at all the execu- tives in the parking lot, turns to his guest, smiles and says: ‘‘Look at all these people who have been away from their jobs. Can you imagine how much money some of these companies have fosi?”’ New Mall Hours!
