AT THIS time of year the staff of
the North Shore Information and
Volunteer Centre receives a
number of questions about income
tax. Some examples and answers
follow. This is general information
only. Readers should obtain pro-
fessional advice for specific pro-
blems.

Question: My boyfriend bor-
towed money from me and said
he’d pay me back from his income
tax refund. Now he’s gone back
east without paying me back. I
have a copy of his income tax
return and he's initialed the place
where it shows a balance due. Can
F take this to Revenue Canada and
ask them to give me the money in-
stead?

Answer: No. Revenue Canada
won't even give you information
about his income tax return unless
he writes a letter authorizing them
to. Hf you know where your
boyfriend lives, you may be able to
sue him in Small Claim Court to
recover your money. There is a
Small] Claim Court workshop every
third Wednesday afternoon of the
month at the North Vancouver
Court House. Call the North Shore

office for more information.

Question: I heard a rumor that
the income tax people were not
giving refunds any more — they
would just keep any extra we paid
and put it ageinst next year's tax.
Is this really true?

Answer: No, it’s not true. This
rumor has come about through a
misunderstanding of the term
‘non-refundable tax credit.’ This
doesn’t mean that you won’: be
able to get back your over-paid tax
— it just means that a person with
no income but who files a tax
return claiming personal exemp-
tion allowance will not receive
money from Revenue Canada in
