& — Sunday, March 19, 1989 - North Shore News MAILBOX BLIND EYE TO PAGE 9 Doug Collins is offensive Dear Editor: Like so many other readers of the North Shore News, I find Doug Collins offensive. 1 cannot under- stand why you continue, three times a week, to publish his intolerant and insulting opinions. However, that decision is yours. My personal decision is this: every issue I totally ignore two pages of the North Shore News. [ never look at the page on which Collins’ diatribe appears. And : ignore the page opposite. As a result of my selective reading, I’m never angered by Doug Collins. Recently, a friend mentioned an advertisement which appeared in your newspaper. It dealt with something I’m interested in, but I didn’t see the ad. Why? Because it appeared on the same page as Doug Collins’ column. That's why I’m writing this letter. | encourage all North Shore News advertisers who wish to reach tol- erant, non-racist consumers to request that their ads not be placed on the same page as Collins. I suspect there are many readers, like myself, who pass up the Doug Collins page — and all the advertis- ing which appears with it. Judith McGana North Vancouver ” Collins ‘a breath of fresh air Dear Editor: I enjoy reading Doug Collins’ column. It is like a breath of fresh air when someone takes unpopular stands when his conviction de- mands it. It is even more commendable when most of the public (the ones I have talked to, at least) either agree with him wholeheartedly or at least with his right to speak his mind. Mr. Collins voices many truths that most public figures would never consider touching on, except perhaps to recite the ‘‘party line."* The North Shore News is also very courageous for continuing to publish Mr. Collins and I hope you continue to do so. It would be an almost irreplaceable loss to jour- nalism and freedom of the press in Canada were he to be withdrawn from circulation by the irrational whim of some pressure group or other. The language English? Have you no love of variety? Do you like only seagulls? Do crows, robins and wrens offend you? Do you cultivate only one kind of flower in your garden? Anticipating your reply, let me say how much more beautiful and interesting is variety of human type. We can only guess about the inner world of birds, but we know how blacks, Sikhs and Chinese think and feel because we are them and they are us. Lock in the mirror and pinch your white skin — ask yourself how far down inside yourself it goes. This is all happening to our fellow human beings not to aliens or animals which in theory we might ignore as ‘not our kin.”* Canadians have made a choice — not unanimously perhaps — but the majority are behind it. Canada is open to all human beings, perhaps not as equally as one might desire but at least open as far as color, lan- guage and culture are concerned. This is a start. So, Mr. Collins, fet’s abandon alf this talk of “‘whites’’ and of ‘‘us’’ and ‘‘them.’’ Stop carping about all the farces and failures of our poor hobbled liberal democracy. There are mistakes aplenty. We all know that. Located at Captiane VW tiSt Marine Dr, N. Ven WEN St DM an pe er Call Steve Coles Capilano AK Mske Auto Loase 985-0694 aw Our planet is no utopia. Doug calls ‘a spade a spade’ Dear Editor: I subscribe to the Sunday edition of your paper in order to read some of Doug Collins’ columns. Because Mr. Collins has the courage to call a spade a spade he provokes the wrath of liber- al-leftists and those who are always ready to smear anyone questioning the veracity of the Establishment version of world history. Today's threat to our freedom is not posed by 80-year- old Nazis, but rather by those at- tempting to enslave us by Turner BOUTON establishing 2 Marxist one-world government. I oppose Nazism, fascism and communism. However, I notice that those who are always so cager to hurl the ‘Nazi’ smear never seem to voice the slightest criticism of communism. Which tells us quite a bit about the smear artists.
