32 - Wednesday, December 28, 1988 - North Shore News music These 1988 releases still sound good YOU'VE PROBABLY already had your fill of “Best Of 1988... dogma, but in the truly unbridled spirit of neophyte criticism, | feel compelled to share with you a listing of records t still reach for long after the shrink wrap has been buried, and the first blush of new discovery has settled into the comfortable groove of a mutually-supportive friendship. In no particular order what- soever, here is some of what still sounds great to these ears: Michael Brecker ~— Don’t Try This At Home, impulse!/MCA 1988 The bebopping sax master is fast and far out on the release. He’s backed by fetlow jazz hotshots Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Mike Stern. The wild musical flights of fancy are based on solid melodic foundations. With sax in hand, Brecker turns a pretty piece of twisted metal and valves into a wailing, honking, living entity. Traveling Wilburys — Volume 1, WEA 1988 Some have written the release off as a half-baked throw-away ef- fort by a conglomeration of cre- atively sapped semi-senior superstars. MICHAEL BECKER record reviewer Granted, the sum is not greater than the parts. Rut it’s an addic- tive, feel-good effort. It lifts the . spirit and it’s fun to listen to. A question for the future: With the . untimely departure of Roy Orbison Wilbury to the great stage in the sky, is there enough Wilbury ma- terial in the can for Volume Il? The Pogues — If } Should Fall From Grace With God, Pogue Mahone/MCA 1988 The rabid, reeling Irishmen let go wich blazing tin whistles and accordion-fuelled pandemonium. The tunes mix the sublime sen- timentality shared by the best of Irish poets with the drunken belly-in-the-gutter ribaldry of a bunch of boozers who have look- ed a bit too deeply into the glass. Any album that contains a song (Streets Of Sorrow/Birmingham Six) banned by Iron Lady Thatcher surely ranks classic status no mat- ter how you may feel about Shane MacGowan’s ragged voice. Tracy Chapman — Tracy Chap- man, WEA 1988 She came up quickly from nowhere to share the world centre stage with pop megastars during the Amnesty Internationa! tour this year. She did it by the power of a clear social vision and an undeni- able talent. The young black singer pushes all of the politically correct buttons and also writes exquisite love songs. Sarah McLachlan — Touch, Net- twerk/Capitol Records 1988 The wide-ranging voice lives somewhere in a twilight afterglow. The romantically-pensive collec- tion from this elemental talent is heavenly. A stunning debut. The House Of Love — The House Of Love, Mercury/PolyGram 1988 An unsettling stream of con- sciousness business, the guitar- heavy sound is a jangling ferment of evocative lullaby lines and ear- cuffing explosions.
