The policy refunds to a traveller the difference between what he paid and the lowest fare available when he submits a death certificate to the airline. . The reader called to praise War- dair. Two years ago, his brother died suddenly in England. He called Wardair and explained the circumstances. The next day he was aboard the Wardair flight to London, paying their lowest fare with: no pre-booking’ regulations. He added that Wardair requested a - _copy of the death certificate for their files. Fitness is probably the biggest international ‘movement to hit North America in the past 20 years. . eo Naturally, -the Americans . responded with'a huge number of select, resorts where guests could hide behind ‘‘golden doors’? and emerge fit and beautiful. The cost ensured that the clientele was the tich and famous. Personally,.I always felt that the vanity’ involved. was a bit distasteful — imagine a clutch of . middle-aged - ladies: in .pink tutus and” mud packs kicking up their heels ‘to the tune of Ain't She : Sweet? and. you have my impres- sion of the whole thing. ‘“{Four years:'ago, Pat and Juanita , Corbett opened a.resort at 108 Mile House that ‘puts fitness in a much more’ sensible, . family- -Ori- ented | perspective. . If you wish, you may simply rent a chalet, cook your own meals and take part in as many or as few activities as you wish. One member of the family might want to do the complete spa routine while the rest do recreational activities. Another advantage is that the travel wise Barbara McCreadie 108 Mile Ranch, with its P.G.A. golf course and tennis courts, is jesi across the road. The two resorts work in cooper- ation with each other so that guests may use all facilities on a fee basis. They have any number of _ package deals available at what I consider to be a real bargain. ‘ Here’s an example. One of their packages. is a 10-day winter weight-loss program. . it. includes chalet accommodation, calorie- counted meals, daily hike, aquatic classes, stretch classes, aerobics, fitness testing, massage, manicure, pedicure, facial, pool, saunas, hot tubs, exercise equipment and in- - cludes taxes. If. you want to go by yourself, you have a whole three-bedroom chalet to rattle around in. That will cost you $1,083...“ If you share the chalet with ‘three. of your femily or friends, the cost drops to $608 per person. I had a look around and spent one night there last week. No, they didn’t get me doing aerobics on a pair of skis, but I did go on a short hike. I even managed to get up ven a “Cardiac Hill’ with no more than three rest stops. The food in the restaurant was very good — the bread is the un- qualified best I’ve ever eaten. This time of the year the trail horses are pastured elsewhere but the magnificent teams of draft horses are at the barn and pull guests around on sleighs. These gentle giants have one problem — they think they're lap cats and can't get enough of cuddling and petting. They share their corral with Rupert, a peppermint-addicted donkey. Have you ever fed a donkey? Neither had I and it’s quite an experience. Rupert purses up his soft lips like a pair of tweezers and gently lifts the mint off your palm. His eyes glaze over if you scratch his ears. During the summer, trail rides depart on a regular schedule all day long. In addition, there are full and half-day rides for those with strong backsides. At the bottom of Cardiac Hill there's a huge tecpce, the destina- tion of the sleigh rides or hay tides. They build an enormous open fire in the centre and serve guests hot wine in the winter and a cold punch in the summer. i was really impressed with The Hills and wished that. it had been in operation when our kids were smaller. We were always looking for unusual family vacation spots where there was enough to do to keep the kids out of our hair, but where I could do most of the cook- ing to keep the cost down. The only problem that The Hills is having just now is the weather. Who expects 50°F, in the Cariboo on the 25th of February? Not cross-country skiers! To make matters worse, they had 200 people show up for a treasure hunt on skis the next morning. If you decide to pay a visit to ski, don’t commit yourself until they have a cold snap. Their summer brochures ought to be out‘soon. If you're curious, write: The Hills ' €-26, 108 Ranch 100 Mile House, VOK’ 250. Britain and Europe in the bag! AN MARCH 17 * 7:00 pm. Or, for that matter, at a health ranch. Well, | was simply checking out one of the properties we own — you and me — BC Rail. I'd like to report that it’s doing very well and we can all be proud of it. The ride between North Van and 100 Mile House takes eight hours and part of it scared the wits out of me — an hour and a half of ter- ror through the Fraser Canyon isn’t for the faint-hearted. The coaches are pleasant, clean and comfortable. You can go either Cariboo Class, which in- cludes meals, or Coach Class mat on the bac where you can brown bag or buy sandwiches. I enjoyed breakfast, the lunch could stand improvement and the dinner was perfectly ade- quate. Round trip to 100 Mile is $63 coach, $101.80 Cariboo Class, which includes two meals each way. These are adult fares — seniors and kids pay less. Alcoholic beverages are served at moderate bar prices. Perhaps the most impressive part of the whole trip, other than the scenery, is the quality of the service. The ‘‘stewardesses’? — an awful term but I can't think of a better one — are the friendliest and most efficient I’ve ever en- countered and that covers a lot of airlines.
