FAIL LAL RCL PUP ES ELIE TNE IOSTSUR TVG WSO ON neparation monies Should not be paid Doeat Editor T thought the matter of payment to those of Japanese origin had been settled back in (947. bur there are people today who want to pay them another $443 million or some such ridiculous figure because, they say, a great injustice had been done them. Most of humanity suf- fers injustice in war, Consider the situation then: Japan had treacherously attacked the British possessions in the Far East; Hong Kong and the “im- pregnable’’ base of Singapore were in their hands; HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse were at the bottom of the China Sea; the capi- tal ships of ‘he US Pacific fleet were upside down at Pearl Har- bour; and the Japanese prime minister had boasted that the next to feel the impact of Japan would he the Pacific couse of North America and it seemed within the tange of possibility that he coutd implement this threat. Nooone knew then. as no one knows now, what the action of these Pacific coast people of Japa- nese origin would have been in the event that a heavily-armed force were able to land off the mouth of the Fraser or on Vancouver Island. Self-preservation, net only in- dividually but nationally as well, is the first law of nature. This was war, war against a ruthless, powerful and implacable foe. Our very life and perhaps that of the United States as well was at stake, We had no option but te take the course we took. And no reparations are due anybody. W. Money West Vancouver ENOUGH IS ENOUGH Deport illegal aliens OPEN LETTER TO THE FED- ERAL GOVERNMENT As an immigrant who came to Canada in 1969 having been sub- ject to scrutiny, lots of paperwork, screening, delays, denials and fi- nally, after many months, accep- tance into Canada, | want to know what policies we now have for people to enter the country! I still hear of people from England and Australia, and other Com- monwealth nationals with varying skills and backgrounds, applying through the proper channels for immigration into Canada and ex- periencing long delays on getting approval. Cn the other hand, anyone who can somehow creep ashore at night, be left wallowing in our ter- titorial seas or concoct any other plan to circumvent the normal! en- try process is soon housed, fed, given money and other hand-outs, lawyers, etc. al taxpayers’ expense, and then set free into the com- munity. This country’s immigration bourd must be seen us the laughing stock of the world. This “refugee” status is a bad joke and the sooner clected officials stand up and call “Enough!”’ the better. Start deportation procedures as soon as these people are rounded up, and if they are really not what they claim to be, then send them back where they came from — in- stead of looking for ways to accept this kind of blatant abuse of our system. W.J. Image North Vancouver Banning 2nd suite avoids real issue Dear Editor: The issue of banning in-home suites arose as a result of com- plaints from residents in Lower Capilano. It seemr they were upset by the proliferation of ‘‘Vancouver Specials’’ in their neighborhood. These Vancouver Specials are homes lacking in character built on small lots to a maximum square footage. Many of them are literally up-and-down duplexes. Now, in order to satisfy the de- mands of this particular group of Lower Capilano residents opposed to the building of Vancouver Specials in their neighborhood, the North Vancouver District Council responded with new proposals to make in-home suites illegal. This district council's response is mind-boggling in its inappropri- ateness and in its irrelevance. If the citizens of the District of North Vancouver are opposed to the building of Vancouver Specials in their community the building codes should be changed. Closing in-home suites all over the District of North Vancouver does not address the issue at all. Mary A. Gray North Vancouver RETAIN NATIONAL PRIDE Media set the tone Dear Editor: I believe in free speech, and as a Conservative defend the right of you and Doug to say what you will about the government, | do think, however, the members should be afforded the courtesy of having their proper names and _ titles printed. A legitimate beef is fine, but taking pot shots at the government all the time, in an effort to be hu- morous, belittles our proud and wonderful country, and the image of our country is discredited, The news media should se: the tone for pride in our country. No wonder so many people think anything is permissible in Canada. R.E. Pakulak North Vancouver 1374 McKeen Ave.. North Van.
