Local businessman rebuts insurance hike responses Dear Editor: [ beg to reply fo statements made to reporter Michael Becker in his articles of July 12 regarding drastic rate increases in fire in- Suratice rates. John Charlton says the rates reflect a past crisis and will go down. If that is true the rates should now be down. | contacted his son and suggested that if he had any dissatisfied policyholders that he advise them to contact me. This he flatly refused to do. As for Angus Ree, the MILLA for the area in which the buildings are located: | contacted him at his of- fice and he in turn promised to get in touch with me regarding this matter which he never did. As to Graham Reid, secretary of ICBC: when has a fire claim: ever been settled in court? When can a government body not enact legisla- tion as they see fit, and Tam sure they would not box themselves in regarding this matter. T cannot understand the state- ment by John Reynolds that he has nat received many complaints in hie constituency, and | enclose two photostatie copies of two letters signed by John Reynolds wherein he states, and f quote, ‘Here is an example that shows the concern not only to me but to a number of my constituents. Ef is my NOT THE TAXPAYERS Day-care beneficiaries with 2-family income should foot the bill Dear Editor: Surely those who benefit from day care should pay the costs. So the worker and his employer should be first in line to pay for this benefit. If, however, the worker is un- able to pay because the eniployer pays only the minimum wage, we, the people who pay income taxes, subsidize the employer and the employee, by paying for the care for compassionate reasons, The child should not be penalized more than he already is. Now, if the employee carns enough to pay income tax, that person gets a break by being able to deduct approximately $2,000 a year from earned income — a break that we, the taxpayers, are GAYS, COLLINS if you can't beat ‘em, join ‘em Dear Editor: Being one of the hicks from the sticks, I’m always a trifle tardy in catching up with the news, so I just recently read that your office was picketed by an assortment of gays and strays. Their purpose, it seems, was to demonstrate with a measure of prejudice, laced with a smidgen of racism, to show that straight Sassenach Doug Collins doesn’t have the monopoly on warped opinion, If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, | always say, and bully for the motley crew of hes, shes and its. But that is all right. because we are subsidizing many far less worthy causes. But if day care is fully subsidiz- ed by the people — or, | mean the government — then those of us, and there are many of us, who had to pay the whole shot when we worked and had our children in care, will be required to pay now for the care of other people's children. Station closure protested OPEN LETEER PTO TEXACO CANADA We have kKnowledve that Mike Gibbins, lessee of the Texaco station on Edgemont Boulevard, has been terminated We object very strong- We have received excellent service from Mike Gibbins and his staff in our purchases of gasoline as well as totai car care for the four ears in our family. The Village Texaco Station under Mike's leadership has been an in- stitution for the neighborhood and surrounding area residents who have been depending on it for excellence in workmanship and fairness in price. We cannot understand how a reputable company such as Texaco could deprive a lessee of Mike Gibbins’ calibre of his livelihood and his many customers of a well-run station. It appears to be your policy to do away with the concept of service stations in favor of gas bars. This means a real hardship to the driving public and will eventually lead to an increase in accidents for lack of aay service. We find this totally unacceptable and will forward our concerns to the ministry of transport. Alexander Sutor North Vancouver Made in Vancouvel!
