Tilley designed his fine of

durable, cotton hats five years ago:

when he was is the market for the
perfect sailing hat.

The former art dealer, admitted-
ly ‘‘picky’* when it comes to quali-
ty, said he wanted a hat that would
last.

“I had a very nice sailboat and 1
couldn't find any hat in keeping
with the boat,’’ he said. ‘‘Each one
would fail off, sink or shrink."

Unsatisfied with what was in
stores, Tilley decided to design his
own hat and ended up creating
Tilley Endurables Incorporated.

of one room in Tilley’s Toronto
home, anticipates sales this year of
over $3 million.

To date about 60,000 hats have
been sold, mostly through mail
orders or at boat trade shows.

The company recently expanded
and now produces a line of
“adventure’’ clothing for both
men and women.

North Vancouver has the only
store in B.C. selling the complete
Tilley line.

Tilley said: the business started as
a hobby, and because of that he
was willing to put his ‘‘heart and
soul into it.”" ,

“T take it as a point of honor
that my hats or shorts won't fall
apart when you’re out in the
jungle,”’ he said.

Tilley is so sure of his products

tees,

He said the first person to claim |
that guarantee was an elephant |
trainer.

Tilley said the man owned,
Tilley-brand shorts for three years.
but they were worn down because
of the elephant’s ‘‘terribly rough’’
back.
