SMOKING IS fast becoming one of the hottest issues in the workplace. In British Columbia, smokers are outnumbered three to one and, increasingly, clean air policies are being written into new working agreements. Recent studies report that second-hand smoke, which enters the atmosphere from the burning end of a cigarette, actually has higher levels of nicotine, tar, car- bon monoxide and cancer causing agents than the smoxe inhaled by a smoker. This fact alone has non- smokers up in arms over their right to breathe clean air. But it’s not just non-smoking empioyees who are pushing for controls on smoking in the workplace. Employers are finding that smoking at work is bad business. An estimated one to two billion dolars are lost annually by Canadian businesses due to time taken for smoke breaks. Smokers are also absent from work more often and have twice as many on-the-job accidents as non-smokers. And smoking employees incur more maintenance costs such as janitorial services, repainting walls, cleaning windows and carpets. Of course, getting smokers to quit, even once they understand they are endangering others with their habit, is no easy task. Dr. Richard Donevan, a chest specialist at Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Hospital, estimates smoking is the causc of the health problems of 75 per cent of his patients. In effect, these people would be leading normal lives if they had been non-smokers. . “The hardest part about getting them to stop smoking is when there isn’t much in the way of symptoms.
