on transportation needs

NORTH VANCOUVER City Council has eecepted an in-
vitation from the district to join a committee to labby gov-
ernment on the North Shore’s transportation needs.

Ald. Ernie Crist, who heads the
district's efforts to create the
committee, says Worth Shore
municipalities and the Squamish
Indian Band must ‘‘speak with one
voice’ to put pressure on the fed-
eral and provincial governments to
install ‘‘much-needed’’ improve-
ments to the North Shore's
“escalating’’ transportation pro-
blems.

The district is still awaiting

response from West Vancouver
Council and the Squamish Indian
Band.

Part of the committee's job, said
Crist, is ta lobby for the extension
of the Skytrain across Burrard In-
let onto the North Shore, for
clearer approaches to Second Nar-
rows Bridge and Lions Gate
Bridge, for construction of the
Cassiar connector, and for the
widening of the Upper Levels

Highway.

“*We have to unite our forces to
lobby as strongly as we can to get
what we need,"* Crist said. '‘We
have to get a commitment from the
provincial government to extend
the Skytrain onto the North Shore.
if we don’t yell for it now, we'll
lever got it.”

Crist said he expects an answer
from West Vancouver and the
Squamish band soon,

“Td think they will respond soon.

because it is in their best interests
to do so.”"
