He celebrates grad night by smashing up his girlfriend’s car As wild and irresponsible as Billy is, his girlfriend (Mare Winningham) i is reliable, car- ing and usually sensible. While blind to Billy’s nature, she is dedicated to her job as a social worker, The rest of the crew is pure yuppie. Kirbo (Emilio Estevez) is a part-time waiter in St. Elmo’s bar (the local hot spot for all the gang) and plans to be a lawyer, But Kirbo ends up floundering around on the shoals of love over an older woman, who could be at least 2A: When this movie is at its best, the camera is often pointed at youthful ex- periences like Kirbo’s unre- quited love. Kirbo is consum- ed with passion over a girl he hardly knows and considers it a matter of life or death that he possess her, body and soul, Kirbo’s buddy Kevin (An- drew Dolenz) has his own pro- blems with love. Kevin is the aspiring journalist writing obits for a Washington paper. Kevin has a jaded, cynical ap- proach to love. His favorite line is ‘love sucks’’, but he is secretly infatuated with a good friend’s lover. To balance out the macho, wildman image of musician : Billy, we are introduced to Jules (Demi Moore). She is the 1980's woman on the run, Headstrong, strungout on coke, this vivacious Jady is soaking up the good life in the fast lane. No group would be com- plete without a live-in pair of lovers. Alec (Judd Nelson) loves Leslie (Ally Sheddy) but also loves politics and sex on the side. Leslie wants her own career in architecture before settling down and won’t marry Alec. For those over 30, there is The Big Chill. For those under 30, there is St. Elmo's Fire to heat up those college memories, St. Elmo’s Fire is now play- ing at the Royal Centre. Guided Walks: Your best bet is to buy a copy of the weekly magazine ‘What's On in London” for a current schedule of these informative tours. They leave from various locations all over | London and concentrate on different themes such as “Ghosts and Horror Stories” which takes you to the sites of famous murders and hauntings, ‘‘London Pubs’’ — all sorts of the most in- teresting ones or ‘‘Historical Walks‘? — concentrating on certain eras in history. Each one is interesting and there is a targe choice of times and itineraries. Prepare to walk 4-5 miles but at a very leisurely pace with lots of stops. Theatres: Far too many for me to list, ‘‘What’s On’’ is your best bet for times and locations. It’s impossible to get tickets for some of the more popular shows such as “Cats’’ without booking months in advance OR buy- ing a packaged theatre tour OR by getting to the theatre early and hoping for a cancellation, With longer running plays such as ‘The Mousetrap”’ there is no pro- blem and you can get tickets- either through your hotel or they’li direct you to the nearest booking office. I know I've left out hun- dreds of other London at- tractions but I’ve just given you my entire itinerary for my upcoming visit to Lon- don. You see, I’m taking my middle daughter on a first visit and I’ve got to draw the line somewhere. If we can fit even this much into five days we'll do well!
