A22 - Friday, May 11, 1984 - North Shore News FIRST IN _A SERIES Capacity for change key to Neighborhood House SINCE THE doors of Neighborhood House first opened in 1939, the North Shore the facility has expanded from an operation focussing solely on daycare recreational outlet community. One of the keys to the House’s longevity has been its capacity for change. Ex- ecutive Director, Doug Sabourin says the House has adapted through the years. “It’s not always stuck in one mode. The House at- tempts to achieve a balance between recreation and social services. Its mandate iS to provide programs and services to enhance the quality of the community,” says Sabourin. The services offered by the House constitute perhaps the most crucial aspect of the House. Ranging from the highly successful Food Bank to the legal advice centre run by the Untversity of B.C. law students (from May to August), the services provide vital advice and information to many people who could otherwise not afford them FOOD BANK A prime case in point 1s the Food Bank, which has played a vital role at the House since July, 1983. It supplies an average of 190 bags of supplementary gro- ceries to the needy each week. The Bank's distribution coordinator, Andrew Woods says al one point the House was supplying between 200-250 people with groceries. Smaller bags are handed Out to single people. Woods says the highest rate of people using the Bank are singles in their 20's. Single men outnumber the rest of the Bank’s users by a ratio of about four to one. GENEROUS Each week. additional supplementary items are also handed out with the regular groceries, depending on the availability of funds or donations from various sources. One week in early May saw the distribution of smoked fish, jars of peanut butter, muffins, eggs and fresh vegetables. Regular food donations are picked up at the various food drop-off points throughout the North Shore, from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay. A service which also depends on donations, Co-Pro provides free clothing and household goods for people on low income and income assistance, as well as for seasonal workers. Co-Pro coordinator Bar- bara Davies (who also runs a Co-Pro centre in West Vancouver) says the North Vancouver outlet has operated for the past seven ey ; ice R RETO RosB’S JEWELERS «= years. Open only three days a week, due to the cutbacks by the provincial government’s grant programs, Davies says both North Shore offices annually attract about 5000 persons. Davies says extra services conducted by Co-Pro, such as gardening and home maintenance for seniors and the handicapped, are also undertaken when she can obtain some extra” grant money. The same situation exists when it comes to the rent. “The Community Grant we get covers my salary, the rent and the phone. If I get some extra money, I'll donate it to the House for rent.
